Hi folks - i have an idea/ dream.

Flowoflava the Crestworth & Mathmos Lava History page has had over 3000 hits in total and i was thinking, all these people who come and look at the site, represent lava lamp fans and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came and take a look at the site, it means a lot to me.

But a lot of these people are probably new folks just looking at a lava lamp and so i was thinking why not put a link to the history page on oozinggoo so we can integrate these people into the lava line and bring more members. Tell me what you think and i could even make an icon that could sit on the front page and take people there.

It would bring a lot of folks into the lava lineand keep traffic up and more newbies etc and make flowoflava more easier for people to find too. Tell me what you think folks. Maybe i am crazy but i think it would be cool.

these are the messages i get from the site and why i love the site so much:

Hi.

We have a Crestworth lava lamp dating back to the 1970's. My mum bought it for us when we got married and we watched it every evening until we could afford to buy a TV.

Is it still possible to obtain the fluid? Ours need a top up.

Best regards.

it would cool to bring this to the lava line?

peace to everyone,

astrobaby

That is why they are posting in the science lab so much. Seriously, we need to make these forums members only or require an embedded graphic alpha neumeric code in order to post. In order to overthrow the preprogrammed bots, you need to do something to interfere with their preset missions. Deleting unwanted posts hours after their arrival is not the answer. These suggestions would throw a monkey wrench into their intended actions. I might sound like a broken record for constantly repeating this, but the spam bots are broken records too. Following these suggestions can help stop the play of all the broken records.

SCOTT13A-BOT
Logged Offline

Private Message Reply: 1 - 43

Jimmy
February 21, 2007, 4:26am Quote Report to Moderator

Board Moderator
Posts: 1,107

I agree PLEASE DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Logged Offline

E-mail Private Message Reply: 2 - 43

SCOTT13A
February 21, 2007, 4:50am Quote Report to Moderator

Big Member
Posts: 371

The search engine bots would still be able to index the site with these suggestions. You like the high traffic. But to be honest with you If you did a google search for lava lamp, oozinggoo.com is listed 3rd on the list. Which is great for new traffic and users. You've established a permanent place in search engines and are pretty well known. I guess what I'm saying is now that oozinggoo.com name is out and listed high there in cyber space it's time to protect it. Your place in search engines is a perfect place for bots to attack because the bots want to hit high traffic areas. Most of the real ppl who post here are already members anyway. Not to mention registering is extremely easy a 10 year could do it. It's better to make this a member only board IMO. Even while the activty is hot, it is not worth what it appears face value. It's like a department store full of browsers but no one is buying because it doesn't have what they want in stock (lava lamp talk without all the extraneous garbage), or they can't find it because of all the clutter (spam).

I've already mentioned many times about the site becoming members only; so I won't go into much detail here except to say that it is time. I also mentioned about using a graphic alpha numeric code to post in order to eliminate the ability for robotic automatic posts. This should not be a deterrent to valuable posters. It's not a fifty foot high fence. If you can't handle something simple like that to help maintain the integrity of the site, then you shouldn't be posting.

I've read a lot about how search engines work over the past six years, and I believe that the site will actually do better in the search engines and send more new visitors if there were less non topical stuff being posted in the wrong forums. You won't get high quality links to your site (the kind which the search engines value) if your site isn't focused on the subject that it covers. The webpages need to have a strong theme in order to maintain strong rankings for related keywords.

Letting the site get junked over by this extraneous garbage lowers the appeal of the site. It is very distracting. It's like having a pain in the ass relative of your spouse living with you and there is nowhere to go to escape. Conversely, preventing junk postings will help the integrity of the site as it keeps it more topical. Non lava lamp related threads should be kept in the correct forum for them so that the rest of the pages of the site can be properly indexed.

The casual user of the site wants less clutter. They have many websites to choose from. They can eliminate choices which are unfocused (because of spam or otherwise) or that present content which they weren't seeking, are off topic, or are downright offensive. Lately the spam bot postings have included a lot of offensive jokes which are also posted in the wrong forum for them anyway. (Not that I am offended. I am very dirty minded, but this crap isn't for the general lava lamp collecting population.) I can go to a number of humor sites if I want an abundance of this content and I do, but for others it is unwelcome - even if it is deleted in a few hours.

This game of "delete the spam" (very similiar to the "wack a mole game") which you are playing is not going to give you the intended results. It aggravates the regulars and provides a non stable, non uniform, messy site for the casual viewers. Letting the spammers take control (which is what they are doing) is like priming your house for a visit from the president and making everything all nice, but at the last minute, letting your big stupid clumsy dog run around unrestrained for an hour tearing everything up and crapping all over the place. You can clean up the mess afterwards, but the damage has already been done.

The problem of member accounts becoming deactivated might be due to efforts to delete unwanted postings. I believe that our accounts might be suffering from this "friendly fire". My account was the first one that got zapped like that. All of my over 200 posts were shown to be posted by "2" instead of by SCOTT13A. That deflated the hell out of me when I saw that. Later it happened to DLR (#127), WeeboTech (#8), RMJohnson70 (#50), and a few minutes ago I saw that it happened to fog rider (#58). I felt like I was excommunicated by oozing goo and wasn't in a good mood for the next day.

This stuff is obviously pissing off a lot of the members. The regular posters are growing sick of it. The regulars will probably stay because they have a vested interest in the site, but the newbies and casual viewers won't. You'll hear bitching from us regulars, but not much from the noncommitted. If things don't look good to them, they won't complain. They just won't come back. There are a zillion websites out there. If you have a problem with one, then you can always go to another.

If you are trying to draw many non posting or low posting members to the site, it is not a wise move to let the spam bots stay in mafia style control over the site - or at least the Science Lab where they wield power. In order for human visitors to come to the site, they need a theme in which they are interested. The regular members and frequent posters here provide that theme. Having a spam tolerance policy which antagonizes us regular members who provide this content is not a good long term strategy for building the popularity of the site with lava lamp interested visitors who can add to the site with their own unique ideas later on.

Instead of having the problem of repeatedly posted spam which is constantly deleted, many of us would like it if there weren't that problem to be dealt with in the first place. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure or something like that. Most of us are more interested in lava lamps than in the topic of spam and would appreciate not having to deal with the issue on the site. We have enough spam to deal with between our emails at work and at home and the spam postings on other websites as well as the annoying pop up adds that are so abundant on the internet. We regulars want to escape that when we come here so that we can relax and enjoy the flow of the lava.

SCOTT13A-BOT

http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html

Logged Offline

Private Message Reply: 15 - 43
hube
February 23, 2007, 8:01pm Quote Report to Moderator

lava love
Medium Member
Posts: 170

Thank you Scott, for putting into so many words what I cannot

PEACE, LOVE AND LAVA
Hube
Logged Offline

Private Message Reply: 16 - 43
SCOTT13A
February 23, 2007, 8:18pm Quote Report to Moderator

Big Member
Posts: 371

Anytime! In other words, everything would be as normal while you type in your current posting, then you click on the Post Reply button as usual. Once that is done, a window, either new or in this pane, would pop up with an incoded word asking you to type it in to finalize your posting. This way no one would have to register, and only real people could post. This would cut down on a lot of it. All we have been talking about is the "up front" (registering) when I feel in reality we should be focasing on the "end result" (the actual posting procedure).

Logged Offline

E-mail Private Message Reply: 18 - 43
SCOTT13A
February 24, 2007, 3:48am Quote Report to Moderator

Big Member
Posts: 371

I agreed with your idea when you posted it months ago on the old site. The new site is a little better in that it shows someone not registered as "guest" unlike the former host site, but you can still type in their name or someone else's.

We had a set of 14 spam postings in one day from one member account, weatherlqlwkimb; so the embedded graphic string of numbers and letters would help. When I first saw that member name before the junk posts, it looked to me like a spammy name with the nonsense characters at the end. I still say that this account should be deleted since anyone logged in can go to the member list and see everyone's email address. That is when I quickly decided to make mine private.

SCOTT13A
Logged Offline

Private Message Reply: 19 - 43
Jimmy
February 24, 2007, 4:14am Quote Report to Moderator

Board Moderator
Posts: 1,107

I noticed since joining this new site that I have been getting a lot of spam in my Hotmail email...hmmm

Logged Offline

E-mail Private Message Reply: 20 - 43
SCOTT13A
February 24, 2007, 6:19am Quote Report to Moderator

Big Member
Posts: 371

Quoted from Jimmy
I noticed since joining this new site that I have been getting a lot of spam in my Hotmail email...hmmm

I'm sorry about that. This is nonsense. The latest series of posts are by a newly set up member account, sunky001, which now has access to all of our email addresses which haven't been made hidden by us. We need to enact a posting code and go members only as another layer of protection since most of the spam bots don't do it through member accounts.

SCOTT13A
Logged Offline

Private Message Reply: 27 - 43
AndyK
March 4, 2007, 8:17pm Quote Report to Moderator

Medium Member
Posts: 121

What if all new members were moderated, or were not able to post for one week, or a certain amount of time. I doubt any of the spammers would bother to wait around and come back to spam.

Andy

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
Logged Offline

Private Message Reply: 28 - 43
SCOTT13A
March 4, 2007, 8:31pm Quote Report to Moderator

Big Member
Posts: 371

They don't have to wait. They just send their bots to thousands of sites automatically. Their programmers know that many of the sites will not be able to be posted to and some may even disappear or change URL, but they are posting in quantity. This is similiar to the email spam where millions of messages are sent to accounts which don't even exist as they are programming for every combination of email address. They still reach millions of accounts and get a few replies back, which is all they are after. Think of spam like salmon. Millions die as they swim back upstream to spawn, but enough make it to perpetuate the species. Enough spam makes it to their intended recipients that they stay in business.

We must keep these links from even being posted because these people programming them are the type of cronies who lead websurfers to their site in order to scan private information including credit cards and passwords from their computers when they come to check out the pharmaceuticals for sale. These sites usually operate in poorly regulated countries like Russia where U.S. authorities can't do anything.

SCOTT13A
Logged Offline

Private Message Reply: 29 - 43
AndyK
March 8, 2007, 7:04pm Quote Report to Moderator

Medium Member
Posts: 121

Here is what I just saw when I looked on the board. I hope this copied right. Are these "good bots" or "bad bots"?

Quoted Text
5 Active Users (0 members; 2 bots; 3 guests; 0 invisible)Data taken from the past 15 minutes.
MSN Bot, Yahoo!
